My "Go To" Summer Beverage

This summer, with temperatures reaching well into the 90's and humidity levels above 60 percent, staying well hydrated is important for everyone, especially when exercising. I have been trying my best to find the perfect re- fueling beverage for my post run recovery drink. Consuming enough water is most important but replacing lost electrolytes and getting the right balance can be a challenge for some. Too much sugar or sodium can cause some runners to cramp up so I look for beverages with low sugar content but ones that contain essential nutrients. For me, watermelon juice or slush provides everything you need to stay cool and hydrated. Despite that watermelon is mostly water, it is a nutrient dense food that contains high levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidents. And here is a fun fact: Watermelon is thought to aid in some bronchial conditions like asthma.

Below is a simple watermelon beverage recipe to try - Serve it as a great refueling beverage OR as a refreshing MOCKtail:

1. Chop watermelon into small cubes ( about 4 to 5 cups) and add to a blender.

2. Add 1 to 1 1/2 cup (s) of chopped ice and blend until desired consistency.

3. Add a pinch of lemon if the slush is too sweet.

Some recipes call for sugar to be added but I find that watermelon is sweet enough on its own.
