I am re-blogging one of my favorite topics: Pets and our health!
There is more news on the benefits of owning and caring for a furry friend: not only do they provide unconditional love, but studies are pointing to an impressive list of therapeutic health benefits:
- According to a Purdue University study, spending time playing fetch or cuddling with a loving pet lowers your production of stress hormones, such as cortisol, and also lowers blood pressure.
- Pets make great exercise companions, which in turn could keep your weight at a healthy level. Believe it or not, walking with a dog on a leash burns substantially more calories than walking alone.
- Studies at the University of Virginia show that children who spend lots of time playing with animals actually experience fewer allergies:
- Pets help many people fight off depression. Loneliness can make depression even worse. Caring for a furry companion can help to make you feel needed and wanted, and take the focus away from your personal problems or stresses.
