Staying Hydrated!

Did you know that approximately 75 percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated? Yes, it's true. Some might not even be aware that they are dehydrated, especially if they are elderly. As we age, our thirst diminishes. We then often mistake thirst for hunger and eat instead of rehydrating with fluids. There are several signs of dehydration. Here are just a few:

~ Low energy/ lethargy

~ Sleepiness

~ Muscle cramps, especially following an athletic competition

~ Poor concentration

To prevent dehydration, it's important to start drinking upon waking. I usually aim to drink half my body weight in ounces. If I have a long run scheduled, I make it a point to drink a little more than my usual consumption. I also up my intake if I enjoy a night out and consume some wine over dinner.

To spice up your water enjoyment, try squirting in some lemon juice or flavoring it with a drop or two of cranberry juice.

Drinking water helps boost your metabolism and stop unnecessary cravings and washes away toxins from your body, ensuring a more energetic, glowing, and vibrant YOU! According to, "a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking water (about 17oz) increases metabolic rate by 30 percent in healthy men and women. The boost occurred within 10 minutes but reached a maximum 30-40 minutes after drinking."

Remember folks, food determines how we feel and heal!
