Great Food Swaps

Next time your recipe calls for mayonniase, sour cream, or butter, remember to choose healthier options. These simple swaps will make your meals healthier and just as tasty!

 

(1) Non-fat Greek yogurt resembles the consistency of sour cream and mayonnaise (mayo), but NOT their nutrition and fat content. As you prepare your "dressings" for your meal, play around with the seasonings to get the flavor you like. When I am preparing a Mexican fiesta, and the meal calls for sour cream, I  use yogurt and add red pepper flakes and a dab of salsa. To achieve a different flavor, when I am preparing vegetarian or chicken gyros, I add dill, chopped cucumbers, and pepper to the yogurt dressing. I love yogurt for it's high protein and probiotic content. *

 

(2) Avocados are a great replacement for butter or mayonnaise. Avocados are loaded with fiber, carotenoids, the organic pigments that are found in plants, and are high in monounsaturated fats. These fats help control and maintain healthy cholesterol levels. So, next time, you want a piece of whole grain toast with butter, try mashing and spreading avocado on the slice of toasted bread. And, there is no need for mayo when you add avocado slices  to your roasted turkey sandwich.
