Four-legged Medicine Works!
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pets can assist your health by decreasing blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, alleviating stress, promoting relaxation and creating a sense of well being. Pets can also help ease depression by decreasing a person's feeling of emptiness and loneliness. In a 2002 study at the State University of New York at Buffalo, researchers found that when individuals were asked to conduct a stressful task, they experienced less stress when their pets were with them.
Besides being a cozy companion, dogs can be an excellent motivator for the owner when it comes to getting outdoors and exercising. A game of "Go Fetch!" or a long walk around the neighborhood is a great way to add physical activity into one's day.
New to the neighborhood? Well, dogs are also great socializers and are a great way to help you meet new people.
